Guest Insights Lee Boon Ying: Astronomy, Time, and Hope・在宇宙無形的引力與規律中,亦存在混沌與無序? Does chaos and order co-exist, woven into the universe’s unseen pull and patterns?・And within this dance of forces, are we bound together by a shared fate? With Guest Insights, we invite you to join our stellar team of explorers—embarking on a voyage to experience ‘The Orbit of Hope’ through fresh perspectives and diverse forms, where art and the cosmos meet in dialogue. Our inaugural journey is guided by Lee Boon Ying—artist and former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory—who leads a special walkthrough of the exhibition, introducing audiences to how concepts from astronomy can illuminate the exhibition’s reflections on hope. With his lifelong curiosity and expertise, he brings forward two concepts—entropy and the Doppler effect. These methods for investigating stellar evolution and galaxy motions prompt us to contemplate change, distance, and connection, and to consider how these cosmic notions might inspire our shared lives here on Earth. The walkthrough and Q&A will last 45 minutes. Lee Boon Ying (Boon) worked for 30 years at the Hong Kong Observatory, and was the Director before retirement. He then joined a fine arts programme jointly run by the Hong Kong Art School and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, he founded the Yrellag Gallery at mid-levels together with arts classmates, offering opportunities to young and emerging artists. Apart from painting, Boon uses recyclable materials including cardboard and readymades in his endeavours. He strives to combine art and science in a minimalist style, and seeks perfection through the transformation process. From time to time, he also publishes on print and electronic media covering weather and climate issues, and broadcasts regularly on RTHK expositions on climate change. WMA Space is a private venue for WMA Members only.
