How can the structure and binding of a book influence your reading experience and perception? Which bookbinding method suits your concepts better? In photographic artists’ books, we often see examples of "form follows concept," where artists extend their creative ideas beyond the pages, reflecting them in the binding methods and material choices. A "handmade book" might be your first step into bookmaking. Compared with photobooks made using traditional offset or digital printing, handmade books better convey the artist's ideas and concepts. From layout design and paper selection to binding method and print run, every detail is directly controlled by the artist. Furthermore, handmade books allow artists to freely experiment with the book as a medium, whether through non-linear narratives, the interplay of different materials, or variations in structure. This beginner bookbinding workshop will be led by Fai Gor, a local expert in bookbinding and book restoration. The workshop includes live demonstrations and instructions on three beginner book binding methods: 1) Perfect binding, 2) Three-hole saddle stitch, 3) French Link stitch. Additionally, participants will learn the basics of binding tools and paper. Curious about how to turn a stack of blank paper into a dummy?
