Purchased in Japan in the early 1980s, brand new and never used! Takae is a type of carved lacquer. Saibei refers to the technique of applying layers of lacquer onto the surface of a base material to create relief patterns. (Tsui-koku), while yellow is called "Tsui-o," and the vermillion lacquer layer is known as "Tonko." These techniques are representative of lacquerware. Ordinary lacquerware is hard and difficult to carve, yet depending on its historical development and transmission, various methods exist. The production of vermillion starts with preparing the base material, repeatedly applying lacquer onto it and allowing it to dry. Usually,漆板 (lacquer boards) are made for the bottom base part, and once the base part is completed, the board is removed. In Japan, lacquer of various colors is applied onto the base while considering the carving; therefore, tsuishu is a time-consuming technique.
