The main horsehide material is made from leather called "base," undergoing only tinting. Raw hides collected from across Europe are processed at one of the few specialized horse leather tanneries in Japan. Usually, oils used for finishing are added to and penetrate the leather within the drum during the dyeing process. By applying a friction treatment to the surface of the leather made this way, a smooth and extremely soft texture can be created. This leather offers an extremely natural appearance unattainable with leather that has undergone surface treatments such as embossing or pigment application. The subtle unevenness of color enriches its expression; even if it appears the same, it actually is not.
